Burnout & Chronic Stress

CHRONIC STRESS IS A PROLONGED STATE OF EMOTIONAL, MENTAL, AND PHYSICAL STRAIN RESULTING FROM PERSISTENT PRESSURES, WHICH CAN LEAD TO EXHAUSTION AND DECREASED RESILIENCE.

In today's fast-paced world, chronic stress has become increasingly common, affecting individuals across various professions and lifestyles. It arises when prolonged exposure to stressors—whether work-related, personal, or environmental—leaves the body in a constant state of heightened alertness.

Over time, this prolonged stress can deplete energy reserves, weaken the immune system, and negatively impact mental health. If left unmanaged, chronic stress can lead to burnout, a state of complete physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion that diminishes a person’s ability to function effectively in daily life. Recognising the early signs and seeking appropriate support is crucial for long-term well-being.

Symptoms

PERSISTENT FATIGUE . FREQUENT HEADACHES . MUSCLE TENSION OR PAIN . GASTROINTESTINAL ISSUES . CHANGES IN SLEEP PATTERNS . INCREASED IRRITABILITY . FEELINGS OF HELPLESSNESS OR OVERWHELM . DECREASED MOTIVATION . ANXIETY OR LOW MOOD . EMOTIONAL DETACHMENT . DIFFICULTY CONCENTRATING . IMPAIRED MEMORY . REDUCED PROBLEM-SOLVING ABILITY

The conventional approach

General practitioners typically address chronic stress and burnout by first assessing the individual's symptoms and lifestyle factors. They may offer advice on stress management techniques, recommend cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), and, in some cases, prescribe medication such as antidepressants or anxiolytics if symptoms are severe. Additionally, patients may be encouraged to take time off work, seek counselling, or engage in relaxation techniques such as mindfulness or gentle exercise.
