The severity of TBI can range from mild concussions to severe brain damage, with symptoms varying depending on the extent of the injury.

While some individuals recover fully, others may experience long-term cognitive, emotional, and physical impairments. Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial to optimising recovery and minimising complications.

Symptoms

HEADACHES OR MIGRAINES . DIZZINESS OR LOSS OF BALANCE . SENSITIVITY TO LIGHT OR SOUND . NAUSEA OR VOMITING . FATIGUE OR DROWSINESS . MEMORY PROBLEMS OR FORGETFULNESS . DIFFICULTY CONCENTRATING . CONFUSION OR DISORIENTATION . SLOWER THINKING OR PROBLEM-SOLVING ABILITY . MOOD SWINGS OR IRRITABILITY . ANXIETY OR DEPRESSION . CHANGES IN SLEEP PATTERNS . INCREASED FRUSTRATION OR IMPULSIVITY

The conventional approach

General practitioners typically diagnose TBI through neurological examinations, cognitive tests, and, if necessary, brain imaging such as CT scans or MRIs. For mild cases, rest and symptom management are often recommended, while more severe cases may require rehabilitation, physiotherapy, or specialist referrals. Pain relief, psychological support, and strategies for cognitive rehabilitation are commonly advised to aid recovery.
