Ketogenic Metabolic Therapy is an emerging approach within nutritional psychiatry and metabolic brain health.

It explores how shifting the body’s primary fuel source from glucose towards ketones may support brain energy, blood sugar stability, mitochondrial function, inflammation and nervous system resilience.

At Re:Health, we use ketogenic therapy in a careful, evidence-informed and clinically thoughtful way - not as a quick-fix diet, but as a structured metabolic intervention designed to support the brain and body together.

Our 12-week online group programme has been created for adults experiencing mental health or cognitive concerns who want expert guidance, practical structure and supportive accountability as they explore whether a ketogenic approach is right for them.

Starting: September 2026

Length: 12 weeks

Format: Online group programme

Includes: Short videos, weekly Zoom coaching, support group, recipes, resources and tracking journal

Could your brain need a different fuel strategy?

Many people come to us after years of trying to manage symptoms without fully understanding what may be driving them.

Mental health and cognitive symptoms do not exist in isolation. The brain is deeply influenced by blood sugar regulation, insulin signalling, inflammation, mitochondrial function, nutrient status, hormones, sleep, stress physiology and the gut-brain axis.

Ketogenic Metabolic Therapy is based on the idea that the brain is not separate from the body. How we produce energy, regulate glucose, process fats and support cellular health may all influence how we think, feel and function.

This programme is for people who want to explore that connection safely, intelligently and with the right level of support.

This programme may be relevant if you are experiencing…

  • Low mood or depression

  • Anxiety, panic or nervous system dysregulation

  • OCD, Schizophrenia, Bipolar – alongside appropriate medical care

  • Brain fog, poor focus or mental fatigue

  • Energy crashes, cravings or unstable blood sugar

  • Cognitive changes, memory worries or reduced mental clarity

  • Metabolic concerns such as insulin resistance, PCOS, fatty liver, weight gain or blood sugar issues alongside mood or cognitive symptoms

You do not need to have a formal diagnosis to join the programme, but you do need to be medically stable and suitable for a group-based nutritional approach.

What is Ketogenic Metabolic Therapy?

A therapeutic ketogenic diet is a carefully structured nutritional approach that reduces carbohydrate intake, provides adequate protein and increases healthy fats to encourage the body to produce ketones.

Ketones are an alternative fuel source for the brain and body. Ketogenic diets have long been used therapeutically in epilepsy, and there is now growing evidence for in their role in mental health, cognitive function and neurological conditions.

At Re:Health, we refer to this as Ketogenic Metabolic Therapy because the goal is not simply to “eat keto”.

The goal is to support metabolic flexibility, brain energy, nervous system stability and whole-body resilience.

Why metabolic health matters for mood, focus and cognition

The brain is an energy-hungry organ. It needs a constant supply of fuel, oxygen, nutrients and cellular support to function well. When metabolism is disrupted, the brain may feel it.

Blood sugar swings, insulin resistance, inflammation, mitochondrial stress, nutrient deficiencies and hormonal changes can all affect mood, cognition, focus, resilience and emotional regulation.

This is why nutritional psychiatry looks beyond symptoms alone and explores the biochemical and metabolic terrain beneath them.

Research into ketogenic metabolic therapy for mental health is still at an early stage, but pilot studies and case reports suggest it may be helpful for some people with serious mental illness, including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.

This is exciting - but it must be held carefully.

Ketogenic therapy is not a cure for mental illness. It is not a replacement for medication, therapy or psychiatric care. It is a promising adjunctive approach that may be supportive when implemented safely and appropriately.

Introducing the Re:Health Ketogenic Metabolic Therapy Programme

A 12-week guided group programme starting September 2026

This programme has been designed to take you step by step through the foundations of ketogenic metabolic therapy, with the education, structure and support needed to apply it in real life.

You will not be left with a diet sheet and expected to work it out alone.

Over 12 weeks, we will help you understand the science, prepare your kitchen, plan your meals, track your response, avoid common mistakes and adapt the approach to your body, symptoms and lifestyle.

This is a group programme, but the approach is still thoughtful, clinically informed and rooted in the Re:Health philosophy: personalised, evidence-informed and whole-person.

Short Teaching Videos

You will receive concise, practical teaching videos that explain the key concepts without overwhelming you. These are designed to help you understand what you are doing and why it matters.

Recipes and Meal Planning Resources

You’ll receive recipes, food lists, shopping guidance and meal ideas to make ketogenic eating feel nourishing, colourful and realistic. The aim is to help you create meals that feel satisfying and sustainable - not restrictive or repetitive.

Weekly Zoom Coaching

You’ll be invited to a weekly live group coaching session on Zoom for guidance, troubleshooting, accountability and support as you implement the approach. Recordings will be available if you cannot attend live.

Ketogenic Therapy Journal

You’ll receive a structured journal to help you track mood, sleep, energy, focus, cravings, digestion, ketones, glucose where relevant, and symptom patterns. Tracking is important because ketogenic therapy is not just about macros. It is about how your brain and body respond.

Supportive Community

You’ll have access to a private support group for encouragement, accountability and practical support between sessions.

Practical Resources and Guidance

You’ll receive materials to help you prepare, implement and troubleshoot the approach, including guidance on electrolytes, hydration, fibre, digestion, symptoms, social situations and long-term next steps.

Your 12 Week Journey

Phase 1: Prepare

Before making any major dietary changes, we help you understand the foundations.

You’ll learn what ketogenic metabolic therapy is, how ketosis works, why ketones may be relevant for brain health, how to prepare safely and how to plan your first week.

This phase is about preparation, not perfection.

Phase 3: Stabilise

Once your body begins adapting, we focus on consistency, nourishment and therapeutic depth.

You’ll learn how to create satisfying meals, maintain fibre and micronutrient intake, support the gut microbiome, adjust meals for energy and mood, and handle real-life situations such as travel, social events and family meals.

This phase is about making the approach sustainable.

Phase 2: Transition

The first few weeks of ketogenic therapy can bring noticeable changes in energy, appetite, digestion, mood and sleep.

You’ll learn how to reduce carbohydrates in a structured way, support electrolytes and hydration, avoid common early mistakes, balance protein and healthy fats, and begin tracking your response.

This phase helps you move into ketosis with less overwhelm and more confidence.

Phase 4: Personalise

Not everyone needs the same version of ketogenic therapy.

Some people do well with a stricter therapeutic ketogenic approach. Others may need a gentler low-carbohydrate or cyclical strategy. Some may need more carbohydrates around hormones, sleep, exercise or stress.

In this phase, we explore your individual response, what your tracking is showing, whether therapeutic ketosis is helping, and what your longer-term options may look like.

The goal is to understand what your brain and metabolism need.

This programme may be suitable for adults who are interested in ketogenic metabolic therapy for mental health, brain health or cognitive support.

It may be particularly relevant if you:

  • Want to explore a metabolic approach to mood, focus or cognitive clarity

  • Experience brain fog, poor concentration or mental fatigue

  • Struggle with blood sugar crashes, cravings or unstable energy

  • Have metabolic concerns alongside mental health symptoms

  • Are interested in nutritional psychiatry and metabolic brain health

  • Want structured guidance rather than trying to piece it together alone

  • Are willing to track your response and make dietary changes for 12 weeks

  • Are continuing appropriate medical or psychiatric care where needed

This programme may also appeal to those who have read about metabolic psychiatry or ketogenic therapy and want to explore it in a safe, structured and evidence-informed way.

Important Safety Note

If you are under the care of a psychiatrist, GP, mental health team or other medical professional, we recommend discussing the programme with them before joining.

This programme is designed to work alongside conventional psychiatric care, not instead of it. Please do not stop or change any medication without speaking to your prescribing clinician.

Designed for the brain, not just the body

Many ketogenic programmes focus mainly on weight loss.

This programme focuses on brain energy, mood, cognition and nervous system stability.

Weight and metabolic markers may change as part of the process, but they are not the only goal.

Evidence-informed, not dogmatic

We follow the emerging science with interest and caution.

Ketogenic metabolic therapy is promising, particularly in the field of metabolic psychiatry, but it is not yet a universally proven treatment for mental illness.

That means we do not make exaggerated claims.

We educate, guide, monitor and personalise.

Designed to sit alongside conventional care

This programme is not anti-medication and not anti-psychiatry.

Many people exploring ketogenic metabolic therapy are also taking medication, working with a psychiatrist, seeing a GP or having psychological therapy.

We see nutritional and metabolic approaches as part of a broader care picture.

Medication can be essential and stabilising. Therapy can be deeply valuable. Ketogenic metabolic therapy may offer another layer of support by addressing some of the underlying metabolic and nutritional factors that influence the brain.

Frequently asked questions Is this just a keto diet? No. A standard keto diet is often used for weight loss. Ketogenic Metabolic Therapy is a more intentional, therapeutic approach that considers brain energy, metabolic health, nutrient status, symptoms, safety and sustainability. The focus is not simply carbohydrate restriction. The focus is using nutrition to support the metabolic environment of the brain and body. Is ketogenic therapy proven for mental health? The evidence is promising but still emerging. There are small pilot studies, case reports and growing clinical interest suggesting ketogenic therapy may be helpful for some people with mental health conditions, including bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. However, larger controlled trials are still needed. This programme does not present ketogenic therapy as a cure or a replacement for psychiatric care. It is an adjunctive nutritional and metabolic approach. Can I do this if I take medication? You should speak to your GP, psychiatrist or prescribing clinician before starting as medications may need adjusting. Ketogenic diets can affect blood sugar, blood pressure, fluid balance, weight and metabolism, which may influence medication needs in some people. Psychiatric medication should never be stopped or changed without medical supervision. Can this help bipolar disorder? There is growing interest in ketogenic metabolic therapy for bipolar disorder, and early research is encouraging. However, the evidence is still preliminary, and further trials are needed. If you have bipolar disorder, you should only explore ketogenic metabolic therapy alongside appropriate medical care, especially if you have a history of mania, hypomania, psychosis or medication changes. Can this help anxiety or depression? Ketogenic therapy may support some of the metabolic factors that can influence mood, such as blood sugar regulation, inflammation, mitochondrial function and brain energy. This programme does not replace medical care, therapy or medication. It offers a structured nutritional psychiatry approach that may sit alongside your existing support. Will I need to test ketones? Ketone testing can be helpful, especially if you are using ketogenic therapy for a therapeutic purpose rather than general wellbeing. We will guide you through the different options and explain what may be useful. Will I have to eat lots of meat? No. Ketogenic diets can be designed in different ways. The programme will include a range of meal ideas using high-quality protein, healthy fats, low-carbohydrate vegetables, nuts, seeds and other nutrient-dense foods. Vegetarian ketogenic approaches can be more challenging but may be possible with careful planning. Is this suitable for children or teenagers? This group programme is currently designed for adults. Children and teenagers need more individualised support, especially where growth, development, neurodivergence, eating patterns or mental health are involved. For younger clients, we recommend discussing one-to-one support. What if I have a history of disordered eating? A ketogenic diet can be inappropriate for people with active or past eating disorders, depending on the situation. Because the approach involves food rules, tracking and restriction of certain food groups, it may not be suitable if you have a history of anorexia, bulimia, binge eating disorder, orthorexia or significant food anxiety. Please contact us before joining so we can advise whether a different form of support would be safer. What happens after 12 weeks? At the end of the programme, we will help you reflect on your response and consider next steps. That may include continuing ketogenic therapy, moving to a more flexible low-carbohydrate approach, cycling carbohydrates strategically, introducing further testing, or moving into one-to-one support if your case is more complex. The aim is not to keep you dependent on a programme. The aim is to help you understand your body and make informed decisions.
